What is Sheffield Doc/Fest Selects?

Sheffield Doc/Fest Selects offers a curated programme of films from all over the world, from our Official Selection 2020, across the following film strands: Into the World, Rebellions, Rhyme & Rhythm, Ghosts & Apparitions and the Exchange.

How long will the films be available for?

Films are available now for pre-booking and will be released for viewing following a film’s cinema screening in Sheffield which will take place between October and November. You can rent a film in advance and watch later from Your Library, which can be found in the top right ‘Signed In As’ dropdown of any Selects page. Please see individual films for more details on release date and time.

New films will appear on Selects for pre-booking every two weeks on the following schedule:

Rebellions: Friday 16 - Thursday 29 October
Films available now

Rhyme & Rhythm: Friday 30 October - Thursday 12 November
Films available for pre-booking

Ghosts & Apparitions: Friday 13 - Thursday 26 November
Films will be available for pre-booking on Monday 2 November

The Exchange: Monday 21 September - Thursday 26 November

How do I buy a ticket and view a film?

First, register an account by clicking the “Create Account” button at the top right of the screen. Search for a film in the search bar or the Browse A-Z dropdown. Click the film thumbnail image to be taken to the film’s main page. From there you can click the “Watch” button, and you will be taken to a pop-up window where you can add your credit or debit card details (or promo code if you have one). The film is added to your library and will be available to view following its cinema screening. The date of availability will be listed on the film’s thumbnail in your library. Once available, the film’s rental period will be 10 days. Once you click play you have 30 hours to complete viewing the film. During that time you can watch as many times as you like. If you wish to view the film after these 30 hours have passed, you will need to purchase the film again.

What kind of tickets are available?

You can buy a ticket for an individual film, or for a collection of films (one of our strands or shorts packages). Click here for more details.

Where are the films I have paid for?

You can see the films you have paid for in your ‘Library’ in the drop-down menu under your signed-in name on the top right of any Selects screen.

What payment methods are accepted?

All major debit and credit cards including Visa, Mastercard and AMEX are accepted

Can I save films to a list?

Yes, click the ‘Add to My List Button’ on a film page or thumbnail, which will save the film to ‘My List’. You can find ‘My List’ under the dropdown for your account in the top right of any page of Selects.

Can I watch films from anywhere in the world?

You must be located within the UK to watch films.

I can’t see a Watch Button on the film I want?

If there is no Watch button on the film’s info page, it is only available as part of a shorts programme, has not been released yet, or you are trying to watch from outside the UK. Films in a collected package will have a link to the purchase page from their individual films page.

Is it possible for films to “sell out”?

Similar to our physical festival, some films may sell out. There are a limited number of views available for each film on Selects. Once a film sells out, it will no longer be possible for viewers to watch the film on Selects unless you are already in your watch period or had purchased it as a Doc/Single prior to the sell out. If you purchased an Into The World ticket, films will be automatically removed from Your Library if and when they reach the maximum view limit.

Will there be any Q&As with the filmmakers?

There will be Q&As and introductions from filmmakers added to Selects, free to watch, over the course of the autumn programme.

Can I download films to my computer?

No, the films are not available for download.

Do the films have age ratings?

We screen films before their distribution meaning that most films will not have been age certified in the UK. For this reason, we recommend that Sheffield Doc/Fest Selects is accessible to those aged 18+ only.

Can I watch the films on my TV?

Yes, by using Chromecast you can cast from your browser on your device from within Chrome on Mac OS, Windows and Android, or by using AirPlay to connect to an Apple TV. Alternatively, you can connect your device to your TV using an HDMI cable.

Please note a limited number of smart TVs built-in web browsers are compatible with Selects due to the Digital Rights Management system used.

Can I watch on different devices?

When you watch a film, the device you use is registered with the Selects. You can register up to 3 different devices. You can manage the devices on your account at ‘My Devices’ under the ‘Signed In As’ dropdown in the top right of any page of Selects.

Will my internet be fast enough?

You will need a broadband or fibre internet connection - dial-up will not work. If you can watch Netflix or Amazon Prime, you should be able to watch Selects films.
